ABSTRACT In the present, study we analyzed the electronic properties of Steviol, the Stevia rebaudiana metabolite, and its interaction with antiapoptotic protein BCL-2. The ionization potential and electrophilicity index values were evaluated in the framework of the DFT, and these values suggest that Steviol may form ligand-receptor interactions. Also, the bond dissociation energy and the electrostatic potential distribution of Steviol reveal its antioxidant behavior. Docking studies were performed to evaluate the feasibility of this molecule to interact with antiapoptotic protein BCL-2. However, no hydrogen bonds were found in the pocket site, instead six interactions, including alkyl and π-alkyl type were formed, suggesting that the possible most feasible mechanism for anticancer activity would be through free radicals scavenging.

Level of educational achievement and screening tests for admission to higher education are strongly correlated with socioeconomic background and the type of school of the applicant, these situations would be a performance predictor for college freshmen students. Whereas the scores to be accepted into the medical career have a significant difference between the first and last selected, we wonder if there is a leveling factor that reduces the gap of origin. We analyze the performance in practical assessments and theory tests at the beginning and end of the academic year 2009 comparing the first and last selected according to the PSU score admission to medical studies at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. Significant differences were observed in the performance of the first assessment of the theory of Anatomy and the final score obtained in the course, however, no significant differences in both the first practical test and practical final exam of the course. Our results suggest that the only evaluation level, which overcomes the differences of origin of the examined, are our practical tests; assessments in which the performance of the first and the last selected medical student is more homogenous. This type of practical assessments, performed on cadavers, primarily demanded experiences in our practical segment, standing by on the degree of skill or experience held by the students related to their educational institution of origin.

Las mediciones de los logros educacionales y las pruebas de selección de ingreso a la educación superior están fuertemente correlacionadas con los antecedentes socioeconómicos y el tipo de establecimiento educacional del postulante, situación que representaría un factor predictor del rendimiento para los alumnos de primer año universitario. Considerando que los puntajes de ingreso para la carrera de medicina presentan una diferencia significativa entre los primeros y últimos seleccionados, nos preguntamos si existe algún factor nivelador que reduzca esa brecha de origen. Se analiza el rendimiento en las evaluaciones prácticas y pruebas teóricas, al comienzo y al final del año académico 2009 comparando los primeros y últimos seleccionados de acuerdo al puntaje de ingreso PSU a la carrera de medicina de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Se observan diferencias significativas en el rendimiento de la primera evaluación Teórica de Anatomía y en la Nota Final obtenida en el curso, en cambio, no se encuentran diferencias significativas tanto en la primera Evaluación Práctica cómo en el examen final práctico del curso. Nuestros resultados sugieren que la única evaluación niveladora, que logra superar las diferencias de origen de los examinados, la constituyen nuestras pruebas prácticas; evaluaciones en las cuales el rendimiento de los primeros y de los últimos seleccionados de medicina es más homogéneo. Este tipo de evaluaciones prácticas, realizadas sobre preparaciones cadavéricas, demandan fundamentalmente experiencias vividas en nuestras actividades prácticas, colocándose por sobre la mayor o menor habilidad o experiencia que posea el estudiante relacionada con su establecimiento educacional de origen.

Congenital absence of the hepatic portal vein is an extremely rare malformation that was first described by John Abernethy in 1793. Only 101 cases had been described in the literature until 2015 and most affected females. In this anomaly, also known as congenital extrahepatic porto-systemic shunt (CEPS), intestinal venous drainage is derived towards the territory of the systemic veins and could be associated with other birth defects, including heart and biliary tract anomalies, metabolic diseases, mental retardation. We present the case of a 2-year-old boy who died because of multifocal pneumonia and necropsy showed anatomical findings consistent with this malformation as an incidental finding. The portal vein followed an anomalous course and joined the right renal vein, forming the "mesenteric-splenic-renal" venous collector, which then received the right gonadal vein and ended at the confluence of the common iliac veins. In our case this anomaly was associated to intestinal malrotation, aberrant hepatic artery and persistent left inferior vena cava, situation described once in the literature. The finding of these anatomical abnormalities in cadavers has a great teaching value for our undergraduate and graduate students who are learning anatomy and they can also assess the associated clinical.

La ausencia congénita de la vena porta hepática es una malformación en extremo rara, fue descrita por primera vez en 1793 por John Abernethy y a la fecha se han reportado sólo 101 casos. Afecta con mayor frecuencia a mujeres y determina que el drenaje venoso intestinal sea derivado hacia el territorio de las venas sistémicas. Es también conocida como derivación porto-sistémica extra hepática congénita (CEPS), por su sigla en inglés, y se asocia a otras alteraciones congénitas,incluyendo anomalías cardíacas, de las vías biliares, enfermedades metabólicas y retardo mental. En este trabajo presentamos el hallazgo de esta malformación en el cadáver de un niño de dos años de edad, donde la vena porta seguía un trayecto anómalo y se unía a la vena renal derecha. El confluente venoso "mesentérico-esplénico-renal" así formado presentaba un trayecto descendente, recibía a la vena gonadal derecha, y desembocando en la confluencia de las venas ilíacas comunes. Esto se asociaba a mal rotación intestinal, arteria hepática aberrante y a vena cava inferior izquierda, situación descrita sólo una vez en la literatura. El hallazgo de estas anomalías anatómicas en los cadáveres disecados con fines docentes en nuestro Departamento de Anatomía, tiene un valor formativo indiscutible para nuestros alumnos de pre y postgrado, quienes pueden valorar las implicancias de este conocimiento anatómico en la clínica diaria.

The difficulties of access to cadavers have forced anatomists to replace dissections with the use of preparations treated with various methods of conservation and/or anatomical models; high-cost items that intended to imitate - not always successfully - the cadaveric preparations. Recently, new methods have been developed for 3D printing of models of body segments using computed tomography images or scanner surface, so that the technology exists to create replicas of body sections or cadaver dissections to apply for teaching purposes. We present our experience in 3D printing technology applied to create replicas of human body sections, allowing us to generate an accurate reproduction, with real and tangible sections which retain the proportions exactly as well as topographic relations, morphological and color accuracy, without the possibility of decomposition or contamination.

La dificultades de acceso al material cadavérico han forzado a los anatomistas a reemplazar la disección por el uso de preparaciones tratadas con diversos métodos de conservación y la utilización cada vez más frecuente de modelos anatómicos, elementos de alto costo que pretenden imitar, no siempre con éxito, a las preparaciones cadavéricas. En el último tiempo se han desarrollado métodos de impresión 3D de modelos de segmentos corporales utilizando imágenes de Tomografía Computadorizada o escáner de superficie, de modo que existe la tecnología para poder realizar réplicas de secciones corporales o de disecciones humanas para aplicarlas con fines docentes. En este trabajo presentamos nuestra experiencia en la tecnología de impresión 3D aplicada a la creación de réplicas de secciones corporales humanas, lo que nos ha permitido generar un símil de la sección corporal, real y tangible, que conserva exactamente las proporciones, las relaciones topográficas, la veracidad morfológica y el color, sin posibilidad de descomposición ni contaminación.

Variations of the upper limb arterial system are an important consideration due to the large number of invasive, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed in this region. We report a rare variant of the superficial brachial artery (SBA) found bilaterally in the upper limbs. In both limbs the SBA desending superficial and lateral of median nerve, and medial to the short head of bicep brachii muscle. Right SBA finished in the cubital fossa joined the deep brachial artery in a common trunk, a rare anatomical variation of island type, while the left SBA finished in the forearm and radial artery. The unilateral presence of the SBA reported with relative frequency, but a bilateral variation is extremely rare. The relevance of embryology, and clinical incidence of this anatomical variation are discussed.

Las variaciones del sistema arterial en el miembro superior son relevantes debido a la gran cantidad de procedimientos diagnósticos, invasivos y terapéuticos realizados en la actualidad. Reportamos una variante poco frecuente de la arteria braquial superficial (ABS) encontrada bilateralmente en los miembros superiores. En ambos miembros la ABS descendió superficial y lateral al nervio mediano y medial a la cabeza corta del músculo bíceps braquial. La ABS derecha terminó en la fosa cubital se unió a la arteria braquial en un tronco común, una variación anatómica rara de tipo isla, mientras que la ABS izquierda terminó en el antebrazo como arteria radial. La presencia unilateral de la ABS se ha informado con una frecuencia relativa, pero una variación bilateral es extremadamente rara. La relevancia de la embriología, incidencia y clínica de esta variación anatómica se discuten.

The condylar asymmetry (CA) is a structural morphological alteration considered an important risk factor for temporomandibular joint disorders. CA can be evaluate by various techniques, mainly based on measurements on panoramic radiographs, given their wide use. However, the methods of x-rays are not very sensitive due to the magnification, distortion, overlapping structures and mandibular positioning. The aim of this study was to determine the values of condylar asymmetry for normal sample by direct measurement in human jaws. Thirty adult human dry mandibles belonging to Chilean population were used. The condylar asymmetry was evaluated by Habets and Kjellberg techniques, and descriptive analysis of mean, standard deviation, minimum and maximum values, and asymmetry/symmetry indexes were performed of each method. According to the Habets' index, 7 cases (23.3%) showed a higher rate of 3% asymmetry, with a range between 3.64% and 27.26%. The morphological parameters of the right and left side showed no significant differences. According to the symmetry Kjellberg's index, 19 cases (63.3%) showed values lower to 93% and were classified as asymmetric. The morphological parameters of the right and left side also showed no significant differences (p<0.05). When comparing the asymmetries reported by both methods, only 4 cases there was diagnostic agreement. By eliminating factors of distortion and angulation on measurements, the existence vertical asymmetry between mandibular condyles of the right and left side is confirmed, and on the other hand, it is clear that there are differences in the values of the asymmetry due to the different methods used. However, it is still unclear that condylar asymmetry can be considered physiological.

La asimetría condilar (AC) es una alteración morfológica estructural considerada un importante factor de riesgo para los trastornos de la articulación temporomandibular. Diversas técnicas evalúan la AC, principalmente basadas en mediciones sobre radiografías panorámicas, dado su amplio uso. Sin embargo, los métodos sobre radiografías no son muy sensibles por la magnificación, distorsión, superposición de estructuras y posicionamiento mandibular. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar los valores reales de los índices de asimetría condilar para una muestra normal con medición directa sobre mandíbulas humanas. Se utilizaron 30 mandíbulas humanas adultas secas pertenecientes a población chilena, y la asimetría condilar fue evaluada las técnicas de Habets y de Kjellberg, y se realizaron los análisis descriptivos de los valores promedios, desviación estándar, mínimo y máximo y los índices de asimetría/simetría de cada método. Según el índice de asimetría condilar de Habets 7 casos (un 23,3%) mostraron valores superiores a un índice de 3% de asimetría, con un rango entre 3,64 y 27,26%. Los parámetros morfológicos del lado derecho e izquierdo no mostraron diferencias significativas (p < 0,05). Según el índice de simetría de Kjellberg, 19 casos (63,3%) mostraron valores inferiores al 93% y fueron clasificados como asimétricos. Los parámetros morfológicos del lado derecho e izquierdo tampoco mostraron diferencias significativas. Al comparar las asimetrías reportadas con ambos métodos, sólo en 4 casos hubo una coincidencia de diagnóstico. Al eliminar factores de distorsión y angulación en las mediciones realizadas, se confirma la existencia de asimetría vertical entre los cóndilos mandibulares del lado derecho e izquierdo, y por otra parte, es evidente que hay diferencias en los valores de asimetría debido a los diferentes métodos utilizados. Sin embargo, todavía no está claro que la asimetría condilar puede considerarse fisiológica.

The fixation and conservation techniques of anatomic material are commonly performed with solutions containing formaldehyde, given its low cost. These have several disadvantages such as the irritating odor, stiffness, discoloration of the structures, toxicity, carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic risk for those who are exposed. Therefore it is desirable to use solutions without formaldehyde. The aim of this study was to compare 2 methods of anatomical conservation, one with formalin (Montevideo's solution) and one without formalin (Prives method) using the human placenta as an experimental organ model evaluating its macroscopic parameters. We used 46 human placentas from normal deliveries and term pregnancy. The placentas were separated into two groups (n=22 and n=24 respectively). The first group of placentas was perfused with formaldehyde solution and the second group in a solution without formaldehyde. Then both groups were immersed and maintained in their respective solutions for two weeks and then withdrawn leaving the air at room temperature for 2 weeks. Quantitative variables were analyzed for weight and diameter of each piece, and qualitative variables as consistency, color, odor and growth of micro/macro organisms were evaluated. Data collection was performed prior to washing at 14, 21 and 28 days. The results showed that conserved placentas with Prives method showed better conservation in relation to its diameter, consistency, color and less irritating odor in relation to placentas treated with formalin solution. In no case was growth of micro or macro organism. In conclusion, using advantageously at alternative solutions to formaldehyde, as the formula of Prives method, better preserved macroscopic characteristics of placentas without generating an irritating smell, stopping the decomposition process.

Las técnicas de fijación y conservación anatómica son realizadas habitualmente con soluciones que contienen formol, dado su bajo costo. Estas tienen varias desventajas como el olor irritante, rigidez, cambios de coloración de las estructuras, así como toxicidad con potencial cancerígeno, teratogénico y mutagénico para quien lo manipula. Por esto, es deseable utilizar soluciones sin formol. El objetivo de este trabajo fue comparar 2 métodos de conservación cadavérica, uno con formol (solución de Montevideo) y otro sin formol (método de Prives) utilizando la placenta humana como órgano experimental, evaluando sus parámetros macroscópicos. Se utilizaron 46 placentas humanas de partos normales y gestación a término. Las placentas fueron separadas en dos grupos (n=22 y n=24 respectivamente). El primer grupo de placentas fue perfundido con una solución con formol y el segundo grupo en una solución sin formol. Luego ambos grupos fueron sumergidos y mantenidos en sus soluciones respectivas por dos semanas y posteriormente retiradas dejándolas al aire a temperatura ambiente por 2 semanas más. Se analizaron las variables cuantitativas de peso y diámetro en cada una de las piezas, así como las variables cualitativas de consistencia, color, olor y crecimiento de micro/macro organismos. La recopilación de datos fue realizada previo al lavado, a los 14, 21 y 28 días. Los resultados mostraron que las placentas conservadas con el método de Prives presentaron mejor conservación en relación a su diámetro, consistencia, color y menor olor irritante en relación a las placentas tratadas con solución con formol. En ningún caso hubo crecimiento de micro o macroorganismos. En conclusión, emplear soluciones alternativas que sustituyan ventajosamente al formol como la fórmula de Prives conservan mejor las características macroscópicas de las placentas sin generar un olor irritante, deteniendo el proceso de descomposición.

A comparative study based on potential energy surfaces (PES) of 2-butanedioic and hypothetic 2-butanedioic/HCl acids is useful for understanding the maleic acid isomerization. The PES enables locating conformers of minimum energy, intermediates of reactions and transition states. From contour diagrams, a set of possible reaction paths are depicted interconnecting the proposed structures. The study was carried out in absentia and in the presence of the catalyst (HCl), using an solvatation model provided by the Gaussian software package. Clearly, the effect of HCl is given by new reaction paths with lower energetic barriers in relation to the reaction without catalyzing.

The purpose of the study was to observe eletrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of luminol using different materials as electrodes such as wires, nails, coins, razor blades, etc. Based on the experimental observations and the mechanisms proposed in the literature, students should be capable of analyzing their results in order to understand the phenomena studied. Students could then elaborate a mechanism of action consistent with the experimental results which could rationalize the formation of intermediates in the reaction and the dependence of ECL on solution pH in addition to other points of interest

The problem of convenient access to quantitative Hückel-level descriptions of Möbius and Hückel annulenes for undergraduate lectures about aromaticity is discussed. Frost circle, Zimmerman circle, double circle and Langler semicircular mnemonics are described. The relationship between spectra (complete sets of secular equation roots) for an isoconjugate pair of Hückel and Möbius annulenes and the corresponding acyclic polyene with one less carbon is fully developed. In addition to providing an alternative path to exact spectrum roots, this relationship provides immediate access to almost half of the eigenfunctions for an isoconjugate annulene pair. The remaining eigenfunctions may be obtained very easily.

In this work we intend to eliminate the idea that laboratory exercises seem like cookbooks. That is, exercises shall be presented as a problematic situation. Based on observation and experimentation, the students should determine the E-Z configuration of maleic and fumaric acids. The basis of this laboratory exercise is the acid-catalyzed isomerization of maleic acid to fumaric acid. Students are given the starting material, reagents and the experimental procedure. They are told that the starting material is a dicarboxylic acid containing a C=C double bond of formula C4H4O4. Students determine melting points, solubilities, acidity and chromatographic patterns for both the starting material and the product, so that a configuration of each acid can be proposed. This type of experiment yields excellent results, because the students are left to deduce that maleic acid is less stable than fumaric acid. Additionally, they conclude that maleic acid is the "Z" isomer and fumaric acid is the "E" isomer. Finally, this laboratory exercise allows the students to develop simultaneously their critical-thinking skills with the respective laboratory techniques and not to see chemistry as recipes to be followed.
